40k Genestealer Cult - All about that base...

Sorry, sorry. Couldn't help it! Now that the majority of the army is assembled I started thinking about basing. I knew I wanted to do a mineworks sort of theme due to the aesthetic of the cult models, but wasn't able to find anything in resin that I really liked. So making my own it is - I wanted to go a little further than just the usual stones and rubble, and broke out the box of plasticard and tubing to see what I had on hand.

Found some small I-beams that I thought would make for suitable minecart track, and some thin rod that will likely be painted up as some sort of power conduit. Gives the bases a little more personality but doesn't overwhelm the models. So far so good!

Moved on to the Patriarch next, and am hoping to get the Purestrains based and get this whole batch primed later today when it warms up a bit - Itching to start painting 'em!

  1. Looking very nice! I envy people that can put together a good looking base. It's an art I never learned!

  2. Love them. Its blogs like yours, where you've got a good handle on the importance of bases that really reinforced that to me. Awesome stuff :)

  3. Omg, you have built and based an entire army in the time it takes me to build a drop pod... You done a better job on the building too :)

  5. I like your work, but am concerned about your taste in music sir -_- No one likes Meghan Trainor. No one. I fear you are spending too much time alone with that cult and it is affecting your humanity...

    =][= Assets dispatched =][=

    Investigation pending...

  6. I can't complain about the joke, I have used it in the past. :)

    Always nice to see a set of minis ready to go through the paint grinder.

  7. I agree, good bases are awesome to look at, I tend to do mine after the mini is finished painting, but then again I dont tend to end up with the same amount of detail in there as yours!

  9. THE SONG! IT BURNS! :) :P

    Looking good all around, and that hammer on the Patriarch's base is an especially nice touch. If I had the courage to cut and rebase my hybrids I'd do this. I was looking at Secret Weapon's range this weekend and kicking myself for not taking the plunge and getting their invasion bases. Maybe if I start a full GSC army....

  10. @Musings of a Smurf: Thanks very much - very much an experiment, going for the 'less is more' thing for now. :)

    @30k plus 40k: Cheers bud! It's something that a lot of people tend to overlook, but I find can really help take a model to the next level.

    @Zzzzzz: Thanks man!

    @Col. Hertford: Haha! Replaced the painting servitor subroutines with a mono-task builder for a while. :)

    @Dave Taylor: Excellent, looking forward to seeing what you use for 'em!

    @Zab: Haha! They'll never find m

    @Rory Priest: Cheers man! Got stuck in with the First Curse over the weekend, pics to follow soon!

    @Kraggi: Thanks! I've experimented with both pre and post basing, this time I just got excited and started throwing down on 'em! Heh.

    @Da Masta Cheef: Hah! Fear not, my terrible pun backfired and I too ended up with that infernal refrain rattling around my brain for hours on end. Argh!

    @#2501: Haha! Aye, I'd considered the alien invasion ones from SW but ended up deciding they were just a little too Giger-esque on the nose for my vision of the army (the full-on alien eggs were the deciding factor), though they were the resin bases of choice of the ones I'd considered and would totally use 'em on a full-on Tyranid army!

    Thanks for the kind words, everyone!
