Heresy Era Word Bearers - Assault Squad Built!

Just a quick hit today on the Heresy front, before setting them aside for a while and diving in to my Dreadtober project. I wanted to add an assault squad to the Word Bearers force, but with the recent price rise the big resin assault squad just got crazy expensive. I figured that as I had a plethora of Mk.IV plastics, I could likely put together something a little more frugally. After trawling through eBay and Pop Goes The Monkey's offerings on Shapeways for appropriate bits, I more or less succeeded!

Though the legs on the plastic Mk.IVs are fairly static (not a lot of running poses), with the assault marine arms they still look pretty dynamic. I really dig the PGtM jump packs as well, though they're a little blown out in the pics. Quite looking forward to getting some paint on 'em, but that's going to have to wait, for now it's time to paint GIANT STOMPY MACHINES!

  1. Those dynamic! Are my eyes deceiving me or are those weapons looking a bit translucent?

    1. Aye, the bolt pistols, chainswords and jump packs are all 3d printed bits from Pop Goes The Monkey. The pistols are perhaps a little large, but the chainswords are really nice (and he does a half dozen other styles as well)!

  2. Printed bits look rather good. And for this being a supposedly "static" unit in posing, you've done rather well to change that mate.

  3. Yep, the 3D printed stuff looks good. plus it's always good to work one's way through the plastic crack pile.

  4. The 3D printed components mess with my eyes in that pic. Kind of like they've been brought in from some CAD program as a concept image, kind of like the plastic for some toy I had as a kid (Capsela is coming to mind, but that wasn't it. I think it was something I used along with my Capsela tho.), and kind of like the plastic that gets used for glow in the dark stuff. I think they look cool, but it's honestly kind of hard to form an impression because my eyes can't focus on them properly. Which, honestly, is kind of a cool effect, but I'm not going to be able to comment on the Minis themselves until you get some paint on them.

    1. Hah! For sure, the translucent-ness of the bits makes them hard to photograph. I hope to get the initial primer and red on 'em over the weekend. Pics to follow!

  5. Mk IV is the best (in my humble, biased opinion! Veteran Sgt. Zhyr is a god!). Agree with Westrider, they look a bit 'glow in the dark' at the moment but I'm sure your painting servitor will rectify this presently.

    1. Indeed! I love Mk.IV armor. The Mk.III plastics are cool, but have a lot of gaps and junk to fill in. I managed to get them primed over the weekend, pics soon!
