Eldar - Painting the wraithbone

A bit more forward motion on the Eldar this morning and this afternoon after work - finished up the wraithbone, and took some pics between each stage to show how I do it:

Starting off I basecoat anything that's intended to be bone with leather brown. The vallejo bone color is pretty translucent and the brown helps give it a warmer undertone than painting it directly onto a black or blue basecoat.

After that is dry, I give the area a few coats of the bone color. Essentially I do a really heavy drybrush, leaving only the very deepest of recesses showing any of the leather basecoat. Another way of saying that is "missed a bit, there". Heh.

Next up is a Devlan Mud wash (aka army painter ink strong tone), to bring a little depth back to the recesses and stop it from looking as flat. This is applied in the "slather a bunch of Devlan Mud all over everything" method.

Once that is fully dry I go in and give the areas a light-to-medium drybrush of the bone color again, concentrating on the upper surfaces especially. That helps the model stop looking like I just slathered a bunch of Devlan Mud all over everything in the previous step.

I'm pretty happy with the psyker contingent thus far, I especially like how the amount of bone steadily increases as it goes Warlock > Farseer > Wraithseer > Bonesinger. Next up is the yellow stage - chugging right along!

  1. That is a heck of a lot of minis to batch paint! Kudos to your stamina. Those are going to look great.

  2. Your honesty slays me. The results are far better than your "up sell" makes them seem. Nice work.

  4. Nice job !

From memory I went with Khemri brown, a Bleached bone over brush and a Skull white drybrush. I think I left the scheme looking a bit scrappier than yours.

btw, I lost the Champion for a week or so, found him hanging out with some unpainted seer council models.

  6. @Drathmere: Thanks man, the fact that they're a decent mix of model types keeps it interesting to paint.

@Zab: Hah! I'm really a pretty sloppy painter, but knowing that I'm sloppy helps me plan for what needs to get cleaned up in later stages. :)

@Manus: Just about! I'm aiming to have 'em all done by the end of the weekend.

@Zzzzzz: Thanks mate! I'm considering giving the extreme edges a super light white drybrush. Glad to hear the champion made it to ya, I was starting to get worried!

@Colonel Scipio: I appreciate the kind words - glad it was a helpful guide!

    Cheers all!

  8. @Impcommander: Congrats on the new job, man! That's great to hear! I appreciate the kind words - I'm running the vanilla Eldar codex at the moment, haven't had a chance to get my hands on the Iyanden supplement yet...

    Cheers!
