40k Genestealer Cult - Initial colors blocked in...

During the week I rarely have much painting time these days (curse you, long commute!) but I've been so excited about the cultists that I have snuck in a half hour here and there over the last few days and blocked in a few more colors on the models. Still more highlighting and shading to go of course, but the models are really starting to come into focus (unlike my photography skills, it seems)!

Veered away at the last minute from my old color scheme, and decided to go with an orange 'asteroid miner' look, which I think suits the semi-spacesuit look the later generation models have. From a color theory standpoint, the orange is a natural complement to the violet/purple/blue tones of the skin and chitin as well. Bonus!

The group has already been spoken for, and I've been asked to match their new owner's basing scheme which is a dusty concrete. Did the purestrain's bases up and it looks pretty sharp, might have to do more in that base color scheme in the future. Once these models are complete I'll be trading them for a new box of Deathwatch, which will provide some further conversion fodder for the Thousand Sons, as well as a second chance to do more cultists (utilizing some of the things I learned building/painting this set).

  1. I like the yellow on there. Nice contrast to the classic scheme. I'd love to get my hands on those models, always loved the idea of the Genestealer cults.

  4. This is what four days work?! Bravo that man. Loving the colour scheme, sticking with that retro sci-fi feel for the suits.

    The skin on the cult troopers is ace, could we get some close ups please boss?

  8. Great minds think alike! I was going to go with space-miner orange for mine too!

    I won't be attaching the eagle to the White Scar biker, though, because the way they want you to do it, it's asking to be snapped right off during transport.

  10. I totally planned to go with exactly same thing with my hybrids (I actually bought bunch of 3/4 gen from eBay as IG, should be any day now...) down to black-ish bases ( I've managed to make rubber moulds for hexagonal tiles, I'm filling it with black tile grout and it just looks amazing, even unpainted), also thought about other colors (the "primary" color other than metal/grey) that would fit - yellow, lime-green, teal/turquoise, deep red, white... Basically color-coding squads so they looks like workers from different sectors/branches/companies/whatever.

    Also slowly working on Taurox replacement (started making 3d model but actually I think I'll make prototype using GW vehicles parts and recast it several times)

  11. @Rednekkboss: Thanks very much! It's a great set, would love to see your take on 'em!

    @Dai: Definitely been fun to paint in some garish colors for a change!

    @NafNaf: Thanks man!

    @Rory Priest: Hah! To be fair I had a pretty open day that weekend and got a good six hours of painting time in!

    @Xacheriel: Indeed - thanks very much!

    @J.D. Brink: Was a risky color to go with but I think it paid off! :)

    @Zzzzzz: It's solid color theory! Hah!

    @#2501: Hah! For sure, that's a recipe for snapped plastic. Looks cool but completely impractical for transport.

    @Pawn Cocktail: Cheers man!

    @Local Ork: Very cool! Looking forward to seeing 'em!

  12. What color paint did you use for the orange? Looks like you washed it as well?

  13. @Ed Morales: Started off with Vallejo Hot Orange, followed by Orange Fire, then it got a GW Seraphim Sepia wash. Easy peasy!
